Orphan project

Overview
In March 2023, Tropical Storm Ana swept across Malawi, causing over 500 fatalities. At that time, the country’s infrastructure was still weakened by Tropical Storm Freddie, which had struck the country just a year earlier.
When the tent camps in Nchalo and the surrounding areas, where the population had sought refuge, were dismantled, it became clear that at least 30 orphaned children remained. Francis Folley informed us that these children would most likely have to survive, among other means, by begging at the Nchalo market. Knowledge about international child trafficking raised concerns about even worse scenarios.
There was little time to decide and set up the project. However, one principle was quickly clear: we wanted to build on the resources available locally. The sheer hardship faced by all affected families often prevented them from taking in additional children. Therefore, the goal was to support suitable families who could raise the children alongside their own. From the very beginning, it was important to us to be able to reliably support each child until they reach the age of eighteen.
Project Goal
All affected children have a foster family who takes responsibility for their upbringing.
Goal achievement
This goal was achieved very quickly. The necessary donors from Switzerland were successfully recruited to support this commitment. In Malawi, Francis Folley was able, thanks to his strong network, to recruit mostly suitable families within a short time.
In addition to the 30 originally affected children, 20 more children were included in the program who were living at the Nchalo Market at that time for other reasons.
